Girard Perregaux Launches New Constant Escapement L.M. Watch

Constant power is the eternal pursuit of watchmakers, and Girard Perregaux has turned this ‘holy grail’ of watchmaking into reality. In 2008, Girard Perregaux released the concept of a constant-power escapement and named it ‘Constant Escapement’ to pay tribute to the brand’s founder, Constant Girard-Perregaux. By taking advantage of the extraordinary properties of silicon, which enables the most innovative structures, this system provides uninterrupted, constant power to the balance, regardless of the remaining energy geometry. Ten years after this major breakthrough, Girard Perregaux launched the new Constant Escapement L.M. watch, which is more technical and modern than ever.

Although the oscillator of the traditional watch movement is very efficient, it has a stubborn weakness: isochronism directly depends on the amount of energy transmitted by the barrel. As the release power of the barrel is decreasing, the amplitude of the balance wheel is also decreasing. Therefore, linear energy supply is the key to accuracy.

Protected by four invention patents, the new Constant Escapement L.M. watch reproduces an impressive mechanism: the butterfly wing frame is placed between the lever and the balance wheel. This intermediate device is used to support an elastic silicon hairspring that is only 14 microns thick and six times thinner than human hair.

Girard Perregaux uses silicon to create this key element, which is wavy, as if floating in the air. It can store energy within a certain limit. When approaching a stable threshold limit, the hairspring appears unstable, and sends out the energy in real time in the form of wave vibration. It repeatedly provides stable and average power to the balance wheel.
